This first half term has provided our pupils at King’s Hawthornes with a wealth of information and guidance from a range of very talented and experienced professionals. Our weekly Careers Enrichment has welcomed Chris Erikson from Be More Apprenticeship Support presenting on Apprenticeships and supported by Mathew Parry a former student, employed by the Ministry of Defence, who shared his personal flightpath and experience of his Advanced Apprentice with the Ministry of Defence.

We have also welcomed training providers from Hugh Baird College and JM education to talk to staff and pupils about T- Levels and Sports Qualifications. T-Levels are a new qualification combining the rigour of Advanced Level study with substantial industry-based placements. They have UCAS point equivalence to 3 A-Levels. JM education offers a wealth of L2 and L3 sports courses in addition to Football Scholarships and their AFA Boxing Academy. Students were impressed by the progression routes of both the T Level and Sports Qualifications, opening up pathways into University, Apprenticeships and Employment.

We were provided with an insight into the range of careers offered by the civil service by Harry Wilson and his colleagues. Degree and apprenticeship routes into the Civil Service were discussed and examples of what particular careers involved were explored from working in the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy to a role in the Cabinet Office.

Liverpool Hope University was show-cased by a presentation from Marc Isherwood. Marc is employed by Shaping Futures one of our partner organisations who promote Higher Education for all, irrespective of background. This presentation was supported by Emily Hagan, a first year Medical Student, who gave an insight into the qualifications and experience required when applying for a Degree in Medicine and described aspects of her first year as a medical student.

Despite being out of school our students in Years 8 to 11 also took part in National Apprenticeship week. The activities were led by staff and in addition Chris Erikson very kindly returned via Zoom to support our Year 10 and 11 students in their sessions.
