You may ask – What is a monologue?

A monologue is a speech given by a single character.  Characters express their thoughts through monologues, and use them to deliver important speeches to the audience and other characters. They can be used to share feelings, plans, anxieties – anything that a character needs to communicate which can only be accomplished through speech.

Monologue Guidelines

Please keep in mind the following guidelines when getting creative.  We cannot consider scripts that do not meet them:

  • Monologues must reflect the current need for social distancing and self-isolation creatively.
  • You may create your monologue from your own perspective or you may perform in character.  E.g you may create a monologue from the point of view of a parent, sibling, grandparent, NHS worker, key worker but please tell us this at the start of your piece.
  • This is a difficult time, but your take on it needn’t be sad! Scripts that bring humour to the present situation and show how we find ways to connect despite needing to stay apart would be refreshing.
  • You may call for simple props and costume in your script provided these are likely to be at hand at home during the lockdown.
  • Perform your piece with enthusiasm and commitment – really feel your own words!
  • Your monologue should be no longer than 2 minutes, including short pauses for effect.
  • You must perform your script in a quiet environment with a plain background behind you.
  • Please e mail completed monologues and scripts to v.hambleton@kingshawthornes.com
  • Deadline: Friday 1st May @ 5.00pm.  The Winner will will be announced on Monday 4th May.

So get your creative hats on and start writing! We are looking forward to seeing all your performances!
